leo tolstoy once said, everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself.
he is right. we always have great plans and dreams in our minds… too ready to achieve something grand that changes the world or benefits all of mankind .for e_ample; we hate pollution and have made up our minds to find new energy sources that keep the environment clean. yet we still litter on the ground. we complain about traffic jams, so we plan to build more highways to solve the problem, but it never occurs to us that our failure to follow traffic regulations is the leading cause of this situation. we are so concerned that the violence in the media has a bad impact on our children, we urge the government to set laws to protect them. but, do we, as adults, set a good e_ample for our kids? we use nasty words and even spit on the ground in front of them, i dare to say, we harm more!
in my opinion, before we decide to change the world, we had better change ourselves first. as ordinary individuals, we do not have the power to change the world. but we can change our habit of littering, spitting, cussing, we can respect the environment around us, we must act as good models for our kids.
if each of us does all of these little things, all of us, millions and millions of individuals together, together we will be strong …strong enough to change our world!
so please, the ne_t time you do something, think how your actions influence not only you, but those around you too, especially our children …and perhaps more importantly…our planet!

他说的很有道理，我们每个人都心怀伟大时志向，时刻准备去干一番能造福全人类的大事业。比如，我们痛恨环境污染，所以我们下定决心去开发新的更高效更干净的能源来保护我们的环境，但是同时我们却随手乱扔垃圾;我们抱怨大城市的交通堵塞，计划造更多的高速路来解决交通问题，但是我们从来没有想过，如果我们能遵守交通规则话，那么这一问题是不是可以得到很大得缓解呢?我们担心电视电影里面得暴力会对我们得孩子产生不良的影响，于是我们敦促政府通过立法来保护未成年人，但是我们这些大人又做得怎么样呢?我们为我们的下一代做好了表率吗?我们说粗话，甚至在孩子面前抽烟。不客气地说，我们对孩子的不良影响更多!
在我看来，在我们打算改变这个世界之前，我们最好先改变一下自己。作为一个普通人，我们其实没有改变这个世界的能力，但是我可以改变我们随地扔垃圾，随地吐痰的坏习惯， 我们应该学会去保护环境，我们应该为我们的孩子起好的表率作用。

she wasn’t really the best critic, since she never had anything unkind to say, but she did giveme love and confidence, and above all, she was very clear that nothing would mean anything ifi didn’t live a life of use to others. and i didn’t know what that meant for a long time. i cameinto this business young and worried about my own e_periences and my own pain and it wasonly when i began to travel and look and live beyond my home, that i understand myresponsibility to others.
and when i met survivors of war and famine and rape, i learned what life is like for mostpeople in this world and how fortunate i was to have food to eat, a roof over my head, a safeplace to live and the joy of having my family safe and healthy. and i realized how sheltered ihave been. and i was determined never to be that way again. we are all, everyone in thisroom so fortunate.
i have never understood why some people are lucky enough to be born with the chance that ihad, to have this path in life and why across the world, there is a woman just like me, with thesame abilities and the same desires, same work ethic and love for her family, who would mostlikely make better films and better speeches. only she sits in a refugee camp, and she has novoice. she worries about what her children will eat, how to keep them safe, and if they’ll ever beallowed to return home. i don’t know why this is my life and that’s hers. i don’t understandthat but i will do as my mother asked, and i will do the best i can with this life, to be of use.
and to stand here today means that i did as she asked. and if she were alive, she would be veryproud.

我在杭外的英语学习大致分为两个阶段，"外向型学习"和"内在型学习"。
由于我就读的小学当时尚未普及英语教育，所以我刚进杭外时，英语基础几乎为零。但现在看来，零基础的学生似乎非常适合杭外的英语教育，因为这免去了老师纠正你之前学习偏差的工作，就如在一张白纸上画画比在一张初稿上作修改更方便一样。
我天性开朗外向。在我最初接触英语时，这种外向型的性格给了我很大的帮助。上课时，我会积极抓住每一次表现的机会，说英语、唱英语歌、演英语短剧、做英语演讲等各种形式的教学安排基本上我都会参与。课余时间老师会组织各色各样的英语活动，比如英语配音、戏剧表演和英语小故事比赛，我也会积极报名参加。因此，我幸运地获得了更多说英语的机会，练就了在公众面前表达自己的能力并培养了学习英语的兴趣。虽然我参与的活动多与英语口语有关，但我所收获的确不只局限于口语方面。杭外形形色色的英语活动除了锻炼口语之外，对英语语感和学习兴趣培养的作用也是十分显著的。我初一时的英语成绩徘徊在班级下游，但初三的时候已经稳定在中上水平了。然而平时我并没有刻意花时间去提升自己的英语笔试成绩。我觉得这应归功于我丰富的英语活动经历。
总之，初中的英语学习，重点应该在参与老师安排的各项英语教学活动中来，没有必要埋头钻研英语笔试的内容。前者是杭外英语教育的特色，学生应该充分利用。
高一时期，我在英语学习上遇到了一些的瓶颈。我在英语活动中有着出色的表现，但我缺乏内在的深厚积淀，给人一种华而不实的感觉。从那起，我开始将学习的重点放到内在的积累上来。在高二阶段，我系统地自学了高中英语语法，有意识地扩充自己的英语阅读量并在该学年坚持每天晚上熄灯前听读cnn新闻听力30分钟。平时说英语时有意识地训练自己表达的逻辑性，有意识地运用一些新学的词汇和句型，使得自己的演说更有内容。
高中英语学习的重点应该是注重内在积淀，扎实掌握所学知识。其中持续坚持的阅读习惯、系统自学习惯、听音习惯等扮演了非常重要的角色。因为它确保你每天有稳定的时间接触英语。必须强调的是，积累的过程是非常漫长的，它可能陪伴你一生。

说实话，假如在我小学时听过我讲英语的人看到我现在所获得的奖项会很惊讶，因为小学时我最差的一门科目就是英语。我从二年级开始上英语课，也许是教材没有很好的同步，且很多同学都在课外班上已经掌握了要学的内容，所以老师对课本知识只是点到为止，也并不解释语法规律，每次总是让我一头雾水，虽然会说一些简单的英语，但却不知道为什么，所以总是落后于在课外班里学英语的同学。
后来上了go for it后，情况有了一些改变。因为go for it是为零起点的学生而设计的，所以将每一个知识点都讲得很清楚。这种系统的、有条理的教学让我逐渐开始掌握这门语言的规律，一跃成为班上英语成绩较好的学生之一。同时也要感谢小学的英语老师，让我学会了规范的语音语调。
到了杭外之后，也许是口试中给考官留下了比较深的印象，我很幸运地被任命为小班的英语课代表。在新学期第一节课的才艺表演中，我得了一等奖。这让我有信心将课代表这份工作做好。在接下来的几个学期中，我参加了很多的英语活动，包括英语歌曲比赛、配音比赛、短剧表演比赛以及英语节drama night节目筹备工作等等。前段时间参加了"二十一世纪杯"全国中小学生英语演讲比赛，并获得了一等奖。
要说学习经验，其实我也没有什么特别的方法。无非就是上课积极参与，认真完成作业，并且珍惜早晚听读时间。我觉得听读时间其实很重要，现在很多同学在听读的时候都很不认真，只顾做别的作业或干自己的事情，其实认真听读英语既可以锻炼口语、听力，也能为日后背课文而省下时间，所以应该是一件需要认真对待的事情。
其次就是多参加一些英语活动。这一点杭外的学生应该是享有很充足的资源的。不管是什么类型的，模联也好，表演也好，演讲比赛也好，总是需要使用到大量的英语，是扩充词汇量、提高英语能力的一个很好的途径。特别是像"二十一世纪杯"全国中小学生英语演讲比赛和"希望之星"这样的大型比赛，锻炼的不仅是语言本身，还包括了很多其他的东西。我在准备演讲比赛的时候，查阅很多有关的书籍和资料，并且和周围的人讨论过很多东西，回答了很多问题，提高了自己的反应能力、逻辑思维能力和语言组织能力。在比赛期间认识了很多从全国各地前来参赛的选手，我也一尽地主之谊，向他们推荐了很多好吃和好玩的。和来自伦敦的美女主持人的交流以及聆听评委的感想同样也让我受益匪浅。
另外可以多看一些英文电影、听一些英文歌曲或者看一些英文书、网站等，有兴趣的同学也可以试着用英语写日记、写博客等等。而且做这些事非常的轻松，完全可以把它们当做放松的方法而不一定非要以学英语为目的。久而久之，就能在英语上有很大的进步。
最后建议大家有空的时候可以去英语角多和外教交流。个人认为和外国人聊天是很好玩的一件事情，因为能够学到的不仅是语言，还有他们以不同的文化和价值观看世界的角度，非常长见识。假如不太有机会和外国人当面交流，可以在网上找一个笔友，以电子邮件往来书信，效果也是一样的。

学习英语需大量"输入"。中国古语道"熟读唐诗三百首，不会作诗也会吟"，之于英语，此言亦得之。关于"输入"，即可分为课内课外。课内所学课文、句型、词组等均为老师精挑细选经最为实用地道的表达，若能做到烂熟于心，作为最基本的语言积累，其功效自然妙不可言。就拿英语演讲而言，在外比赛（特别是初中比赛），评委提问自然是围绕当代中学生生活及有关社会热点，其不外乎课余活动、手机使用、广告、压岁钱、志愿者、环保等等，若是恰巧撞到学过课文，信手拈来，便从容自如了。（当然，做到烂熟于心的程度实属不易。）课外则是自己的补充，可以由兴趣领路，比如看一些热门美剧电影或是杂志小说，寓教于乐，岂不美哉！总之，英语学习非一朝一夕之功，"输入"才会有"输出"。
学习英语，思维是硬道理，母语是基本功。英语说到底无非就是一门语言，是载体，所承载的思想更为重要。在我看来，杭外英语教学的一大特色是除了对语言的关注外还引进关于时政、理论、观点的探讨或是辩论，并介绍西方国家的风俗文化。点滴的思想积累亦帮助语言学习。此外，语言是相通的，学好母语对于学习外语的作用不点自明。
至于具体方法，我以为因人而异，但以下几点建议可供参考。首先，要做到做好老师的要求。特别进入高中，课文一下增长，单词量迅速增多，要做到走在老师前面甚难，那最基本是跟上老师节奏（其实也不易），包括课前预习、听课效率、课后作业、课文背诵、听音跟读等等。若每项都能按老师要求，做到问心无愧，那该生绝对是英语牛人。其次，要时时保持兴趣。"兴趣是最好的老师"，此言老是老矣，但作为真理有永恒的生命力。兴趣可以让人保持对语言的热情和好奇心，从而吸收更多语言元素。另外，杭外英语突出，人才济济。还记得初到杭外，从老师到同学都着实令笔者惊叹。所以要发挥这项优势，从老师、同学身上学习，这不仅会促进语言，说不定会有意想不到的收获。当然，杭外各种丰富多彩的英语活动更提供了宝贵的平台，在实践中学习，并培养其他能力。配音、演讲……这些活动在不知不觉中也塑造更为宽容大气的性格。
作为中国几百万英语学习者中的一员，感觉甚为奇妙。我想杭外大部分学生该和我一样，可以幸运自由地以一种轻松快乐的心情接触并逐渐掌握语言。我想我就像一个在沙滩上玩耍的小孩，偶尔拾捡几颗美丽的贝壳，而伟大的英语海洋仍在面前，尚未开启。所以，一起加油吧。

three mirrors reflect the way i learn english
after i came back from the "21st century-ericsson cup"7th national english speaking competition with the award of the "most promising speaker", people kept asking me the same question over and over again. "how did you learn english, especially as a non-english major?" actually i believe that a hundred people would have a hundred of ways to learn english well. however, i would like to share my personal e_perience of english learning with those who have the enthusiasm for improve their english. since i have set up three mirrors in my prepared speech in hoping that they would guide our young generation on the way to globalization, i would like to maintain three mirrors here to reflect how i learned english.
the first mirror, i assume, should reflect a steady foundation. this involves my first few years of english learning, which i consider as the key factor of all my achievements in the years to follow. at that time i entered the middle school attached to _i’an jiaoton university, i could only say my abcs while others in my class could at least communicate in simple english. all the tales about the frightfulness of learning english then popped up in my mind and made me feel scared. fortunately my first english teacher was very e_perienced in enlightening her students on english learning. she was a kind woman with a charming smile. but her homework assignments were not easy task: they required us to read after the tape for 20 times and recite the whole te_t. so it was quite natural that most of my classmates only recited the short essay within a short time and then went to play. but my fear of not being able to say a single word, made me sit down and immerse myself in what the teacher had asked me to do.
before every english class we would have an on duty report to let the students say something according to what they had learned .my first presentation in class was to recite a dialogue. but to my great surprise, my teacher praised me for my pronunciation. i tittered because i had imitated the readers in the tape for at least 20 times until finally i couldn’t find any differences between our pronunciations. and i did not realize that this little prize given by my teacher began to influence my english learning magically.
i believe the first three years of english learning guaranteed the possibility of my further achievements because by means of imitation i built a foundation of good pronunciation and by means of reciting i restored the basic element of english language. on the whole, i would like to show my sincere thanks to my first english teachers. yu zhiling, who is now still caring for my growth.
the second mirror i would like to mention here reflects an effective way of english learning. i still stick to my point of view that different people have different techniques to learn english well. but there are some methods that seem to be obviously ineffective.
let’s first have a look at the four important skills for students to master: reading, writing, listening and speaking. i have placed them in order of difficulty.
reading is the easiest skill. it is also the most widely found english language skill amongst chinese student, writing is a more active skill than reading. however it is still a little easier than speaking, as there is plenty of time to choose the right words look in the dictionary for help, and make corrections. listening is the third most important language skill to learn. it is far more difficult to listen and understand spoken english than to read english in a book or in a letter. speaking english may be the most difficult of the four language skills. it is an active skill, and requires the student to put words together into sentences without much time to prepare, and with no time for correction, yet it is the most e_citing skill to have, as it opens up wonderful channels of communication with people of others cultures and countries. but this is just what we lack.
more often than not i found some of the students who get high marks in their e_ams showed an inability to communicate with people in english. and this enabled me to understand deeper what my first english teacher has always emphasized: listening and speaking keeping ahead; reading and writing following up. i believe this is the rule of learning a language because we learn a certain language to communicate. as we conquered the most difficult parts: listening and speaking, we would easily master the writing and reading skills.
then how can we make it? i have seen lots of diligent students in the early morning reading aloud their english te_ts without paying any attention to their nearly unacceptable pronunciation. i feel sorry for those students because their hard work deserves a much better english level if they improve their method of learning.
i found that my way of learning english that i formed from middle school still works today. by listening to tapes and imitating the speakers one can improve his pronunciation within a short time. by reciting classic essays one can enrich their language as well as enlarge their vocabulary. as a non-english major, i like to set aside a certain period of time for english learning everyday, usually an hour or at least half an hour. i utilize this precious time by listening to tapes and imitating their content and then reciting the short passages i like. to be frank, "crazy english" has always been my favorite. this is definitely not intended to flatter. instead of dividing my attention between too many materials, i’d rather concentrate on one particular resource at a time such as ce, not only because of its abundant content and native english, but also because of the benefits it has brought to me through intensive reading, listening and reciting, i believe that studying english by using these intensive methods will help you to get twice the result with half the effort.
last but not least, the third mirror reflects the interest in english learning. confucius once said, "knowing it is not as delighting in it." nowhere is this more true than on the matter of english learning. my e_perience in english learning initiated quite passively, but before long my interest in it began to inspire me to continue the process. to testify my english skills and to stir up even greater enthusiasm, i used to participate in various kinds of competitions. when i was preparing for a nation-wide english competition in high school, i got to know the "21st century cup" english speaking competition for the first time as i used their scripts as my preparing materials. i envied those contestants in the "21st century cup" very much. their english skills and their quick response made me feel swooning. although i did not get a good rank in the nation wide competition for high school students, i had begun my wildest dream of participating in the 21st century cup. even after i became an engineering student i still held onto my dream, that it would come true some day. because i can always find something new to challenge me, and set up those challenges as my goals to achieve, i never find english learning a dull job. i believe i will forever cherish the glorious moment when i was on the stage of the "21st century-ericsson cup" 7th national english speaking competition, and my wonderful memories there without any doubt will add passion to my english learning in the days to come.
since the theme of this year’s competition was "globalization", we have enjoyed various visions from contestants on thinking of what we young people should do to meet the challenges and the opportunities posed by globalization. but there’s one thing for sure: good english and communication skills are the gateway to the world arena. i hope some of man and woman in china who have conquered english to hold hands together to build up the bridge between china and the rest of the world with the world’s most widely used language!

as you can imagine, as international students in australia, the biggest challenge is english,
i remembered that when i come here first time, there is a party in the house of my home stay. during the time, they played jokes and they laughed all the time, do you know how embarrassed that is, everyone laughed e_cept you. so i pretend to understand the joke in another party, i saw everyone laugh and i laugh too in 5 seconds later. my home stay was surprised about that and asked me "do you understand?"， and i answered "no"， "so why do you laugh?" "because i do not want to be embarrassed"！
but as i receive this award today, i want to thank to them, because they encourage me to be involved with the committee rather than staying in at home, play computer and speak chinese.
when i came to wantirna college first time, i met liz collar who is international student coordinator. she is very kind to me, and she encourage me join src, i went to src meetings regularly all the time, but i didn’t even know what src was! that is the reason why i told her, i don’t want to go to src anymore. but she said "why not? you should go and you have to go!"i asked" why?" she said:" because i said so!"
but as ii receive this award today, i want to thank her. she helps me a lot.
truth be told, i am not the best student in wantirna college, but i appreciate this award and i will try my best in future.
i think i got 10 seconds left, i want to thank to les and vera who is my lovely home stay, thanks to liz collar who is international student coordinator, i strongly want to thank to my mother, because she support me and gave me the opportunity to come to australia. and thanks to wantinran college, thanks to australia and finally, thanks to everyone to be here tonight.

my name is tiffany, a year 2 student from the university of macau. i am currently an active member of the university public speaking team, president of the honours college student association, and also the vice president of the event department in marketing society. i am very active and outgoing. i enjoy being with people, engaged in conversations with them so that i can understand them more. i like public speaking as it can help increase my self-esteem and self-confidence. aside from public speaking, i am also good at english recitation. i have joined the macao-wide english individual recitation for a number of times when i was studying in the secondary school.
imagine a car without a steering wheel. tough to imagine, right? well, actually that’s the image you see if a person has no faith. faith helps to guide us in our lives, encourage us to persist, and give directions when we are lost.
in this peaceful era, our life paths seem to be already well-planned and determined. what we have to do is to follow. yes, we may face different sorts of challenges, but at least they are less harsh when compared to those in the past. we do not need to worry about starving to death, or how to earn enough money to buy food for our siblings and sustain our lives.
it is like driving from a muddy road into a highway. in the muddy road, path, you would say, as it is formed only by crossing on it many times, flattening the ground to form a smoother area so we can pass. the road is so bumpy and rough, with holes here and there and rocks lying all over. when we drive along this road, we have to be very careful, having a firm grip on the steering wheel, ready for a sudden turn or a large boulder that may appear any second. however, when we drive on a highway, everything becomes different. the road is smooth, straight, and visible. since there is no unseen obstacle, we may lower our guard, rela_ a bit, and loosen our grip on the steering wheel. one may even think, if we only have to drive on a smooth straight road like this highway, why would we need a steering wheel?
nevertheless, one cannot foresee the future. accidents do happen. for e_ample, a car may suddenly appear in front of you. at such times, if you did not have the steering wheel, how could you make a sudden turn? just as no one could foresee the sichuan earthquake nor the japan tsunami. if the one being trapped under the debris did not have faith, he/she would not have survived until being rescued. if we did not have faith, we could not recover from our sadness and rebuild our home.
faith is unique, just as happiness is. we feel happy for different reasons, we believe for different things. how can we know what we believe in? recall the last time you are discouraged, and you felt you had lost all hopes in your life. what pulled you back into the world? what pushed you to stand up and continue to strive again? that is your faith, your belief. faith is what makes you feel you can when others say you can’t.
faith is important…, faith is vital…, faith is necessary for us to live our lives. if we do not have faith, we are like a car without a steeling wheel. we can only afford to move along a straight and smooth path, and cannot meet any challenge in our lives. one must understand that no matter how smooth the road is, it is impossible for a car to go without a steering wheel. or, put it in another way, have you ever seen a car without a steering wheel on the road? so, act now, my friends, find out what you believe in, find out your anchor in your life, hold on to your steeling wheel
of your car, drive on, and reach your destination.

if there were no after life
whether there’s afterlife, the answer has never been the same. the atheists deny after life, believing that our life is no more than from the cradle to the grave. they may care about their illustrious names after death; they may feel attached to the affection of their offspring, but they never lay their hopes on their afterlife. they may also say that good will be rewarded with good, and evil with evil, but they don’t really believe any retribution in their after life.
however, in the religious world or among the superstitious people, the belief in afterlife is very popular. they do not only believe in afterlife, but thousands of reincarnations as well. in the mysterious world, there are the paradise and the hell, the celestial beings and the gods, the buddha and the bodhisattvas.
maybe they really believed it, or maybe they just wanted to make use of people’s veneration, the ancient emperors always declared that they were the real dragons, the sons of god, while the royal ministers claimed to be the reincarnations of various constellations. but can the stars reincarnate?
many people burn incense and kowtow, do good deeds and strive for virtues, not just for the present, but mainly to let god see their sincerity so as to be reborn into a better afterlife, or to achieve the highest enlightenment after several lives of practice. they do believe in afterlife. but i can’t help asking: suppose there were no afterlife, would you still do good deeds and strive for virtues? and if god does not see what you are doing, would you still be so upright and selfless? if you work, not for serving the public and liberating the others, but just for a better afterlife of your own, isn’t it a little too selfish? comparing with this kind of believers, those who don’t believe in afterlife, but still keep doing good deeds, are the most sincere and honest philanthropists, because they do them not for themselves but for other.
you may wonder if i believe in afterlife. my answer is: i know nothing about my previous life, so i dare not make improper comments on afterlife. but i do hope there’s afterlife! because our present life is so short that so many things slip away before our proper understanding. i have so many dreams, so many wishes, so many ambitions, as well as so many regrets and concerns. if there were no afterlife, all of them will remain unrealized!
i’m not contented with the present commonplace life, i’m very much attached to the affections that should have been mine but have been washed away by the hurrying time, and i yearn for the perfection and maturity if i could start all over again. so believe it or not, i’d rather there were afterlife.

举如没有来世
有没有来世，众说纷纭。无神论者，不相信来世。他们认为从生到死，仅此而已。他们可能在意身后的英名，他们可能留恋后代的亲情，但他们不寄希望于来世。他们也会说善有善报，恶有恶报，但并不相信下辈子报应什么。
在宗教领域、或在一些迷信的人群，来世之说比较盛行。不仅是来世，甚至会认为有千百次的轮回。在那未知而飘渺的世界，有天堂，有地狱，有神族，有仙界，有菩萨、有佛祖。
也许真的相信、也许是为了利用人们的敬畏心里，古代的帝王们总是宣称自己是真龙天子，大臣们则标榜为天上的什么文曲星、武曲星或太白金星转世。星星能转世吗?
许多人烧香、磕头，行善、修德，并不都是为了眼前，而是为了让上天看见自己的真诚，以便下辈子有个好的托生，或者几世之后能修成正果。这些人自然是相信来世的。但我不禁要问：如果没有来世，你们会不会一样行善、修德呢?如果神灵看不见，你们是否也会公正无私呢?如果不是为了解脱他人和服务大众才去修行，如果仅仅是为了自己将来托生好才去行善，是否有些自私呢?比较起来，那些不相信来世而又坚持行善的人，则应该是最真、最诚的大善。因为他们不是为自身，而是为公理。
也许有人会问作者，你相信来世吗?我的回答是：我不知道前生，因而也不敢妄谈后世。但我真的希望能有来世!因为这辈子时间太短，许多事情都是在还没弄明白的时候，就已经匆匆过去了。我有那么多的理想，我有那么多的心愿，我有那么多的奢望，我有那么多的遗憾，我有那么多的牵挂，我有那么多的雄心壮志，如果没有来世，那就一切皆空了。
我不甘心眼前的碌碌无为，我留恋被岁月冲走的本应属于我的亲情，更向往从头再来的完美和成熟。为此，信也好，不信也好，我宁愿有来世。
